Submission Guidelines

Our laboratory tests for Vector-Borne Pathogens using Real-Time PCR equipment. We provide testing for Canine Ehrlichiosis / Anaplasmosis and West Nile Virus. Please check with the laboratory for other tests that might be available.

Canine Ehrlichiosis/Anaplasmosis

Molecular Diagnostic Vector-Borne Pathogen Submission Guidelines

Use the General Submission Form to submit Vector-Borne Pathogen samples.

Canine Ehrlichiosis/Anaplasmosis
Collect 2 ml of blood into a tube containing EDTA (purple top tube). Send it to the laboratory by overnight shipment in ice packing.

West Nile Virus
Collect oral or cloacal swabs using a sterile cotton swab from a dead or suspected bird and dip the swab in BA-1 diluents (available from the Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory) and mail it to the diagnostic laboratory in ice packing by overnight shipment.

Collect a piece (1 cm cube or less) of brain and spinal cord tissues from the suspected birds/animals and send it to the diagnostic laboratory in a sealed cover by overnight shipment in freeze pack.

Collect mosquito samples and send the pool of mosquitoes in a sealed sac under freezing conditions.
