Histopathology Submission Guidelines

BVD Sample Submission Guidelines

The histopathology laboratory processes formalin fixed tissues and prepares glass slides for microscopic examination of tissues. These include tissues collected from the necropsy laboratory and tissues mailed in from surgical biopsies or necropsies performed by the submitter. The tissues will be routinely stained with hematoxylin and eosin and interpreted by a board certified pathologist. Additional special stains can be performed in the histopathology laboratory to further characterize abnormal microscopic findings.

In addition to slide preparation and interpretation of samples, fixed biopsy specimens or tissues can be submitted for slide preparation only. The tissues will be trimmed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin or other stains at the request of the submitter.

Glass slides that have been prepared and stained by outside laboratories can be submitted for interpretation by a board certified pathologist.

Histopathology Submission Guidelines
Specimens for histopathology should be submitted in 10% neutral buffered formalin (NBF) in a leak proof, wide-mouthed solid container.
Do Not Use Glass Containers. The ratio of formalin:tissue should be at least 10 parts neutral buffered formalin to 1 part tissue.

When in doubt, collect specimens from multiple organs, including brain. Specimens from each individual animal can be pooled in a single container of NBF provided the specimens are small enough to maintain a 10:1 formalin:tissue ratio.

For questions concerning sample submission, please contact the Diagnostic Laboratory at (785) 532-5650.
